How It Works
CIPP Cured-In-Place Pipe Inversion Lining is one of the most widely used trenchless pipe rehabilitation technologies. It repairs damaged pipelines by inverting a resin-impregnated flexible felt or fiberglass liner into the existing pipe using air pressure or water pressure. After the liner is fully installed, it is cured with hot water, steam, or ambient-curing resin systems to form a seamless, corrosion-resistant structural pipe within the original pipeline.
Unlike UV-CIPP, which uses ultraviolet light for curing, traditional CIPP inversion relies on pressure inversion and thermal curing.
The repair process typically includes the following steps:
Inspect the pipeline using CCTV to assess defects, pipe diameter, and length.
Clean the pipeline using high-pressure water jetting or mechanical cleaning equipment.
Saturate a polyester felt liner or fiberglass liner with epoxy, vinyl ester, or polyester resin using a wet-out system.
Protect the impregnated liner from premature curing during transportation and installation.
Install the liner into the inversion drum.
Use compressed air or water pressure to invert the liner through the pipeline.
As the liner turns inside out, the resin-coated surface is pressed tightly against the host pipe wall.
Maintain constant internal pressure to ensure intimate contact between the liner and the existing pipe.
Remove wrinkles and ensure uniform liner thickness.
Depending on the resin system, curing may be carried out using:
Hot water circulation
Steam curing
Ambient-temperature curing for certain resin systems
The heat initiates resin polymerization, transforming the flexible liner into a rigid, structural composite pipe.
Gradually cool the cured liner while maintaining internal pressure to prevent shrinkage and deformation.
Reopen lateral connections using robotic cutting equipment.
Perform CCTV inspection and pressure or leak testing before returning the pipeline to service.
Applications
CIPP inversion lining is widely used for rehabilitating underground pipelines in various sectors.
Sanitary sewers
Combined sewer systems
Stormwater drainage pipelines
Potable water pipelines using certified liner systems
Non-pressure drainage pipelines
Irrigation pipelines
Industrial wastewater pipelines
Chemical drainage systems
Cooling water pipelines
Process drainage pipelines
Utility pipelines
Highway drainage pipelines
Railway drainage systems
Airport drainage networks
Building drainage systems
Underground service pipelines
The CIPP inversion system can rehabilitate pipelines made from:
Concrete pipe
Reinforced concrete pipe RCP
Clay pipe
Brick sewer
Cast iron pipe
Ductile iron pipe
Steel pipe
PVC pipe
HDPE pipe
Asbestos cement pipe where regulations permit
CIPP inversion lining is effective for repairing:
Longitudinal cracks
Circumferential cracks
Joint separation
Corrosion
Root intrusion
Infiltration and exfiltration
Pipe abrasion
Internal surface deterioration
Leakage
Minor deformation
Structural weakening caused by aging
Depending on the inversion equipment and liner system:
DN100–DN600 small-diameter systems
DN150–DN1200 standard municipal systems
DN150–DN1600 large-diameter systems
Customized systems can rehabilitate pipelines up to DN2000 or larger.
