How It Works

Working Principle

CIPP Cured-In-Place Pipe Inversion Lining is one of the most widely used trenchless pipe rehabilitation technologies. It repairs damaged pipelines by inverting a resin-impregnated flexible felt or fiberglass liner into the existing pipe using air pressure or water pressure. After the liner is fully installed, it is cured with hot water, steam, or ambient-curing resin systems to form a seamless, corrosion-resistant structural pipe within the original pipeline.

Unlike UV-CIPP, which uses ultraviolet light for curing, traditional CIPP inversion relies on pressure inversion and thermal curing.

The repair process typically includes the following steps:

1. Pipeline Inspection

  • Inspect the pipeline using CCTV to assess defects, pipe diameter, and length.

  • Clean the pipeline using high-pressure water jetting or mechanical cleaning equipment.

2. Liner Preparation

  • Saturate a polyester felt liner or fiberglass liner with epoxy, vinyl ester, or polyester resin using a wet-out system.

  • Protect the impregnated liner from premature curing during transportation and installation.

3. Liner Inversion

  • Install the liner into the inversion drum.

  • Use compressed air or water pressure to invert the liner through the pipeline.

  • As the liner turns inside out, the resin-coated surface is pressed tightly against the host pipe wall.

4. Inflation and Positioning

  • Maintain constant internal pressure to ensure intimate contact between the liner and the existing pipe.

  • Remove wrinkles and ensure uniform liner thickness.

5. Thermal Curing

Depending on the resin system, curing may be carried out using:

  • Hot water circulation

  • Steam curing

  • Ambient-temperature curing for certain resin systems

The heat initiates resin polymerization, transforming the flexible liner into a rigid, structural composite pipe.

6. Cooling

  • Gradually cool the cured liner while maintaining internal pressure to prevent shrinkage and deformation.

7. Service Reinstatement

  • Reopen lateral connections using robotic cutting equipment.

  • Perform CCTV inspection and pressure or leak testing before returning the pipeline to service.
