How It Works
Working Principle
The Open-Cut Spiral Wound Pipe Manufacturing System is an advanced production technology used to manufacture large diameter spiral wound pipes by continuously winding plastic profiles into a rigid pipe structure. Unlike in-situ spiral wound pipe rehabilitation, this system produces new pipes in an open production environment. The finished pipes can be installed using traditional open-cut excavation methods or used as replacement pipes for drainage, sewer, and industrial applications.
The system uses a continuous plastic profile, such as PVC, HDPE, or reinforced composite profiles, which is spirally wound by a forming machine. The profile edges are mechanically locked or welded together during the winding process, creating a continuous pipe with uniform diameter, high structural strength, and excellent hydraulic performance.

The plastic profile strip produced by an extrusion line is continuously fed into the spiral winding machine. The feeding system controls the profile speed and tension to ensure stable production.
The winding machine rotates the profile around a forming cage or mandrel. Through continuous spiral movement, the profile is shaped into a cylindrical pipe structure.
The edges of adjacent profile strips are connected through:
Mechanical locking
Extrusion welding
Thermal fusion
Adhesive bonding depending on the profile design
This creates a continuous and strong pipe wall.
The forming system precisely controls the pipe diameter during production. Adjustable forming rollers or support structures maintain roundness and dimensional accuracy.
The system can manufacture large diameter pipes by adjusting the winding diameter according to project requirements.
For higher load-bearing requirements, reinforcement elements can be integrated into the pipe structure, including:
Steel reinforcement strips
Metal profiles
Composite reinforcement layers
These reinforced structures improve ring stiffness and external load resistance.
After reaching the required pipe length, the finished spiral wound pipe is cut into standard sections. The pipe ends are processed according to installation requirements for connection and transportation.
